Drug Office, Department of Health Chinese Medicines Board

Q464 · Category J: Cross-border pharmaceuticals and industry practice (Q451-Q500)
Hong Kong medicine registration does not usually require applicants to submit local clinical trial data, but sufficient international clinical research information must be provided to demonstrate the medicine’s safety and efficacy. If the clinical data submitted comes from internationally recognised regulatory authorities or literature, the Drug Office will accept it. For innovative medicines or special indications, the Drug Office may also request supplementary information. Overall, Hong Kong’s registration process places greater emphasis on international data supporting medicine quality and safety.

📘 Regulatory basis

Section 23 of the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Cap.138), Department of Health Drug Office registration guidance

📗 Drew Tang's recommendations

We recommend that applicants prepare authoritative international clinical data and, where necessary, supplement it with input from local clinical experts. Rengangyongsheng (Hong Kong) Limited can assist with compiling relevant literature.

📕 Risk notice

Insufficient clinical data may delay or prevent approval, affecting the product’s time to market.
