Drug Office, Department of Health Chinese Medicines Board

Q20 · Category A: Pharmaceutical Licensing System and Regulatory Framework (Q1-Q50)
If you suspect that counterfeit or unregistered medicines are being sold on the market, or discover any non-compliant medicine sales (such as a drugstore selling prescription medicines), you should report it immediately to the Drug Office, Department of Health. The Drug Office has dedicated reporting channels, and members of the public can provide information by telephone, fax, email or post. When reporting, please provide as much detail as possible, including the suspected product's name, where and when it was purchased, the shop's name and address, and a description or photographs of anything suspicious. All reports will be handled confidentially. The Department of Health attaches great importance to reports from the public, as they are an important part of its medicine surveillance system. After receiving a report, the Drug Office will investigate and, if necessary, take enforcement action, including conducting inspections, taking samples for testing, requiring a product recall or even bringing criminal prosecutions. Safeguarding medicine safety is a shared responsibility, and your report may protect many people from harm.

📘 Regulatory basis

The Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance empowers inspectors of the Department of Health to investigate and take enforcement action. Public complaints are an important source of information that may trigger such action.

📗 Drew Tang's recommendations

As a responsible member of the public and the industry, reporting suspected violations is the right thing to do to maintain market order and protect public health. Please keep your purchase receipt and the product packaging, as these can serve as valuable evidence. The Department of Health's reporting hotline is (852) 2572 2068.

📕 Risk notice

Please do not post unverified information on social media yourself, as this could cause unnecessary panic or expose you to allegations of defamation. The most effective and responsible approach is to report the matter to the Department of Health through official channels, so that professionals can investigate and handle it.
