Drug Office, Department of Health Chinese Medicines Board

Q208 · Category E: Application Process and Approval Procedures (Q201-Q250)
After your application has been submitted for consideration at a Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) meeting, you will not normally be informed of the result immediately. After the meeting, the Drug Office, Department of Health needs time to process the resolutions and prepare formal written notification. Generally, you can expect to receive an official letter within 2 to 4 weeks after the meeting, notifying you of the outcome of your application. The letter will state clearly whether your licence application has been approved, approved subject to conditions, or refused. If approved, it will specify the procedure for collecting the licence and the licence fees payable. If refused, it will explain the reasons. Although this waiting period may be anxiety-provoking, it is part of the standard administrative process.

📘 Regulatory basis

The PPB operates under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance. Notifying applicants in writing through official channels after a decision has been made is part of the statutory procedure and ensures that the notice is formal and authoritative. No statutory provision specifies a timeframe for notification, although government departments generally follow their internal performance pledges.

📗 Drew Tang's recommendations

During this waiting period, we recommend that clients remain patient and begin preparing for operations in the event of approval, for example by finalising supplier contracts and recruiting general staff. We will closely monitor PPB announcements and use our experience to assess the likely outcome of your case. Once we receive a notification, we will explain it to you immediately and guide you through all subsequent steps.

📕 Risk notice

During this period, please avoid calling the Department of Health frequently to ask for the result. Repeated enquiries will not help speed up the process and may instead give officers an unprofessional impression. All formal outcomes should be confirmed by written notice. Information from unofficial channels is unreliable, so do not make business decisions based on rumours.
